The abbey of Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval is with no doubt its richest building historically speaking. Founded in 1144, it is the starting point of the history of our little village. The church located just next door is the logical continuation of the installation of this abbey in this remote corner of Haute-Savoie. Through this visit, we invite your to discover the history of the Abbey from its beginning with the arrival of Ponce de Faucigny and the canons of St Augustine. You will then discover its evolution and the many roles it has played up to the present day. Inside the abbey, you will discover the main room and its carved wooden beams dating from the 17th century. The church of St Mary Magdalene was built in the 13th century. A part of it was destroyed by a fire in 1680. Different styles are found in this building which are evidences of the different periods of reconstruction or renovation. We will take a short break outside the church in order to observe its magnificent bulbous bell tower. This baroque style bell tower is very common in the Savoie region, and can also be found on Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval's chapels. During our walk around the village square, called Place du Tilleul (in reference to the ancient lime tree that once stood there), we will also mention the various adjoining historical buildings such as the Maison Allaman, one of the oldest houses in Sixt, or the Maison de la Montagne, the former abbey granary.
